Guest Speaker: William Hefty
William Hefty enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1992, completing recruit training at MCRD San Diego that same year. Following recruit training, Hefty went to MCT and MOS basic course, Aviation Electrician in Memphis, Tenn.
Following his various MOS schools, William spent his first 7 years as an enlisted Marine stationed in Cherry Point, NC as a Harrier avionics Marine, during this time he deployed with the 26th MEU and participated in the rescue of Capt Scott O’Grady, a poor wayward Air Farce pilot that got lost in Bosnia and needed the Marines to rescue him. In 1998 he was accepted for the Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program. From 1999-2001, William attended The Citadel as a MECEP student earning a B.A. in History and Spanish.
Upon completing his educational requirements, William was commissioned a Second Lieutenant and attended The Basic School and Infantry Officers Course in Quantico, Virginia. Upon completion of these schools, he received orders to Camp Lejeune, NC for duty as an Infantry Officer, with 2nd Battalion 8th Marines as an infantry platoon commander. During his time at 2/8, William deployed three times for combat operations in support of Operation’s Iraqi and Enduring Freedom, serving as a rifle platoon commander and 81mm mortar platoon commander, spending time in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
Upon successful redeployment to the United States, following his third deployment, William received orders to MCRD Parris Island where he served as a Series Commander and the Officer In Charge of the Parris Island swim training tank. After two years at Parris Island, William was asked to return to the Operating Forces, and assume company command as a member of 3d Battalion 6th Marines. During his command time he deployed to Fallujah, Iraq and Marjah, Afghanistan (the first time the U.S. had been to that area since 1956) serving as a company commander for both deployments. In September 2010, William returned to the United States and accepted orders to Inspector-Instructor duty in Columbia, South Carolina.
Upon successful completion of 2 combat deployments as a company commander William was promoted to the rank of Major and received orders to his final duty station as the Inspector-Instructor for 4th LAR in Columbia SC. During this time, he deployed to Egypt and the Horn of Africa in Support of combat operations for Operation Enduring Freedom.
In December of 2014 Major Hefty retired from active service with the United States Marine Corps.
In November of 2021 William married his smoking hot wife Becca and they have 4 kids (Evan 21, Samantha 18, Sadie 13 and Veda 8) that keep them on their toes at all times. Bill and Becca enjoy many activities to include card games, working out, hanging with friends and the occasional cocktail with friends and family!
Major Hefty was fortunate to have a long full career with multiple deployments and was awarded the combat action ribbon, x2, Bronze Star with V, Nam with V (4 stars) Good Conduct Medal and other unit and personal awards.
